Chih-Chien Wang was born in Taiwan in 1970 and has lived and worked in Montreal since 2002. Following studies in cinema and theatre at the Chinese Culture University of Taipei, he settled in Canada, where he obtained a master’s degree in photography at Concordia University in Montreal in 2006. Chih-Chien Wang explores everyday life and experience, using photography and video to recreate and examine the moments and objects that have become so commonplace to us that we no longer see them. In response to the theme of ORANGE 2012, he is presenting Pain is the Surface of our Exchange, a new work inspired by an ancestral act of filial devotion in China. The custom, practised from the sixth to the late nineteenth century in the Chinese countryside, consisted of ingesting human flesh offered by a child in order to cure a sick parent. By taking as his point of reference this tradition of extreme family devotion, Wang examines, through photography, video and installation, notions surrounding our awareness of the body, food and the experience of pain.
