Alexis Lavoie

Alexis Lavoie was born in Montreal in 1980, where he lives and works. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in visual and media arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal in 2008 and in 2010 won the 12^th RBC Canadian Painting Competition. His work has been exhibited in several galleries in Quebec and the rest of Canada including, most recently, at the Maison de la culture Frontenac in 2012. Alexis Lavoie’s paintings show images of a distressing and traumatic world. Their drama is latent and the things represented uncertain and troubling. For this edition of ORANGE, the curators have chosen works from the series Découpe, depicting human and pig carcasses intermingled in a setting located somewhere between an orgy, a party and a massacre. Also included is a new series entitled Pièce, created in response to the event’s theme and whose paintings are psychological landscapes where twisted animal fragments, a tablecloth motif and children’s toys painted in solid colours intermingle. These strange and claustrophobic scenes, sites of conflict and disaster, open themselves up to multiple interpretations.
