Miru Kim

Miru Kim was born in Massachusetts and grew up in Seoul. In 1999 she moved to New York to study at Columbia University, and in 2006 obtained a master’s degree in painting at the Pratt Institute. Her work has been shown in several cities around the world. Her interest in urban ruins has led her to incorporate into her artistic practice the exploration of abandoned sites such as subway stations, factories and tunnels, through which she wanders completely naked. For Kim, the skin – her own, but also that of the city, which she sees as a living organism – remains an object of fascination. For ORANGE, the curators have invited her to present two photographs from the series The Pig That Therefore I Am, in which she is portrayed nude alongside pigs. Seen in the intimate space of the animals, she appears to be one of them. The two works exhibited on the outdoor walls of the Marché Centre are abstract compositions showing close-ups of Kim’s skin juxtaposed with that of a pig. Inspired by the philosopher Jacques Derrida’s book The Animal That Therefore I Am, which examines the status of the animal in modern and contemporary philosophy, The Pig That Therefore I Am reflects on the relationship between the pig and the human, and their anatomical and biological similarities.
